Frequently Asked Questions
  • Why is Costin Media unique?
    • Most consultants focus on one angle of information analysis. They have the single route they've followed to develop one type of solution, such as software, mathematics, linguistics, literature, or some other discipline. My background is left- and right-brain balanced. It is true that I have studied applied sciences and several programming languages. But I also read and speak four human languages, and earned a degree in literature with a focus on literary and cultural theory. My law degree added yet another perspective to my modes of pattern recognition, and I studied everything from corporation law to intellectual property to legal philosophy to cyberspace and video game law.
    • Costin Media has developed a methodology called Information Dynamics Intelligence (IDI)™, which takes a multi-disciplinary approach to pattern recognition and strategic development. Drawing on more than ten years' success with these techniques, Costin Media has tactical profiles for new ventures (ClearVenture™), growing businesses (MMCI™), and mature enterprises (WH/OC™), each of which being a framework for the discussions we will have and tools we will use together to bring your project into the Information Economy, where "Information is the Good, the Currency, and the Era."
  • How is Information Dynamics Intelligence (IDI)™ different from other business intelligence methodologies?
    • IDI™ determines patterns and extracts valuable information from nebulous human information without oversimplification through earlier, statistics-based business intelligence methods. IDI™ requires a unique blend of inter-disciplinary training, including studies in human languages, machine languages, information technology, the humanities, and the social sciences.
    • Information Dynamics Intelligence™ is a flexible framework used to analyze the flow and behaviour of information. It allows businesses to uncover opportunity and meet change head on, anticipate trends, and keep ahead of normal evolutionary curves. IDI™ focuses on patterns and human elements that went undetected by older approaches to business intelligence. Where older BI methods were statistics-based, and narrow in intended applicability (and thus often applied outside of their appropriate scope), IDI™ draws its analytic and prescriptive techniques from many different disciplines, leading to its flexibility, and its success-rate since I first applied it over a decade ago.
  • Is IDI a computer program or other software solution?
    • Neither! IDI is a methodology for analyzing information patterns...
  • Who has seen your talents in action?
    • The President of a leading career college said, "Jeremy was charged with developing this program - from the front end design to the back end programming details. This project was exciting and energizing for all of us because of Jeremy's style... Jeremy trained our existing staff on some of the courses and made the staff feel they were an integral part of the success of the effort. This demonstrated his ability to see beyond the technical and take people and their strengths into account."
    • A local open-source development guru and tech community leader said, "Jeremy is a rare consultant who understands state and business laws as well as the latest Internet social and technological trends. Many lawyers and business consultants provide little useful help because they have a poor understanding of the Internet culture, online communities... That is not the case with Jeremy."
  • How do we make this happen? Will I meet with you or one of your staff?
    • You and I will work together, forming a project team. Depending on the project, I can introduce you to some of the specialists with whom I sub-contract.
    • Send me a note on the contact page and we'll get in touch. Don't forget to suggest a convenient date to meet!
  • What do you charge?
    • Every project gets my individual attention. We will discuss what the project will entail and estimate the time involved to develop and implement the appropriate solution. I negotiate the costs of my specialist associates, and do my best to keep their rates in line with my own. However it occasionally does arise that for certain tasks, the most appropriate specialist may charge a little bit more for that piece of the project.
  • What is your education background?
    • My post-secondary education is quite broad. I have studied engineering, business, cultural theory, literature, and law. I have degrees in Law, during which I focused on business, technology, and intellectual property; and in Honours English, during which I focused on information patterns.
  • Are you a web designer?
    • I was a web designer for many years. I was also the Curriculum Director for Internet Programming and Web Page Design at a career college, where I developed and taught most of the courses in the program. I prefer now to focus on helping you develop a flexible and sustainable information strategy, and then to contract the development work to specialists.
  • Have you been working in information technology for long?
    • I began working in I.T. in the mid-nineties, and was a partner in a web solutions and data archiving company. From there, I became an information technology instructor and the curriculum director in Internet Programming and Web Design at a career college. I then returned to studying for a number of years, always with an eye to our information society. I have advised dozens of I.T. professionals, entrepreneurs, and business managers.
  • For how many years have you been advising management?
    • I first took on the additional role of "right-hand man" to management in 1999, when I was teaching in a career college. I am an active member of a local business community, with a reputation as a trusted advisor.
